Recently, I have received an email from a colleague about what you should do to climb up the ladder in the company. Or rather, what are the kind of attitude and behaviour one should take on to be noticed by the people in ‘heaven’.
Today, I watched a chinese show on TV. The China’s Next Top Princess:
A spoof of the popular American TV show, “America’s Next Top Model”, the movie tells the story of two girls – one rich, one poor – who get involved in palace intrigues in the hope of becoming “China’s Next Top Princess”.
I feel that this show truly reflects on our reality. Everyone seems to be busy thinking of strategies and ways to climb to the top, reach their goal. It is sad to see how one of the girls betrayed her best friend in order to shine through. In the end, the rich girl did manage to win the title of ‘De Fei’. She was sooooo happy and even went to show off to her best friend. During her wedding day, the emperor passed away and it was the palace’s tradition to have the new concubine buried together with the emperor. Hence, the rich girl was bestowed a cup of the best poison in China. How ironic. I really like her line “I spent less than 5 hours being the concubine, and I have to spend 10 hours to endure the duration of the poison to take effect.” In the end, she tried to run away and guess what….her best friend helped her to escape. She was willing to die with her.
I guess the moral of the story is the importance of rising to the top. Is it really that important? Is it worth sacrificing your own principles, friends and family, freedom, time? You may really want to rise to the top, but is it necessary to step on others in order to shine? Are you considered weird if you do not wish to be part of the rat race? If you are the poor girl, will you still risk your life to help the rich girl to escape? Mr Poto said he will. I guess he has a much bigger heart than me because honestly, I do not have a clear answer yet.
I feel that the true happiness lies in not wanting to get to the top, TRULY not wanting to rise up in the social ladder. And when you are down there at the bottom of the ladder, I pray that you will not be hurt by being the cushion to those who fight and compete to rise. Though air seem to be fresher at the top, at least you will get a much greater amount of air at the bottom since there’s no one there to really fight with. The extra oxygen is definitely good for your health.
Hence, think twice before you decide to climb.
